Exercise Your Way to a Healthy You!

“Lack of activity destroys the good condition of every human being, while movement and methodical physical exercise save it and preserve it”– Plato.

When Plato uttered these words he was talking about a time was to come I guess! However the exact nature of the exercise and healthy body is still under the wraps, but one could definitely conclude that exercise causes a momentary surge in the immune system activity, increasing the numbers of white blood cells and immunoglobulin in the blood, which acts to reduce a person's susceptibility to diseases. Growing inactivity has claimed many lives and it still continues like the latest fad! But what’s the hullabaloo around the lack of physical activity! Many of our new age lifestyle diseases seem to be feeding off this grass!

“If we could give every individual the right amount of nourishment and exercise, not too little and not too much, we would have found the safest way to health.” – Hippocrates [Greek physician]

Many current studies of people with breast, colorectal, prostate, and ovarian cancer have suggested that physically active cancer survivors have a lower risk of cancer recurrence and improved survival compared with those who are inactive.

Walk it out!
Whether you’re running an errand or walking in the mall, a daily walk is a great, low-impact exercise. Studies have found that those who walk for 40 minutes a day take half as many sick days as compared to their deskbound colleagues.

Breathe in and breathe out!
Indians love our yoga and there’s a reason why this ancient form of exercise improves your flexibility and strength while lowering your stress. One can easily hook on to a beginner series while at home with the help of YouTube!

Go back to being a child and pedal on!
Cycling
is an efficient combination of exercise and transit. You can cycle around your complex or colony during the early hours of the day in order to soak up some Vitamin D or just to release some stress from work

Indulge in some recreational sports!
Consider joining any recreational sport that suits you and you can combine some fun time with the workout! However, it is advised to keep your activity moderate as possible so as to avoid exertion or injury!

Hit the Gym!
Going to the gym on a weekly basis can significantly improve your immune system. Cells that promote one’s immunity circulate through our bodies rapidly and are capable of killing both viruses and bacteria. However after exercising, the body does return to normal within a few hours, but a regular exercise routine appears to extend periods of immunity. This isn’t without the statutory warning that heavy and excessive workout might wear your frail self and can do more harm than good. Hence it is advised to create a balance and on your rest days get plenty of sleep and fluids.

Lastly, if all this ain’t fun to you, chances are you might not continue. The goal is to keep your body active in the ways you find fun. The key is to keep your exercise program simple and enjoyable. Exercise and relaxation techniques are great ways to relieve stress. Reducing stress is an important part of getting well and staying well.

So here are some things to motivate you to stick to your exercise program!

  • Set both short-term and long-term goals.
  • However, the focus should also be on having fun.
  • Try something different to keep it fresh.
  • Use charts to record your progress.
  • And finally, reward yourself!
